When we were first launching, the challenge was how can ‘Trella’ change the norms of a 100+year-old market and find solutions for such a fragmented market.
As we were scouting and meeting suppliers in the market to introduce Trella to, we noticed several issues the carriers and fleet partners were facing, from inconsistent demand and inefficient utilization to non-transparent pricing and payment issues.
Trucking has had big issues in the market due to the lack of visibility on pricing and not having a clear view of the settlements and payments. That led to conflicts between carriers, FPs, and shippers. When we stepped in with our application, it changed their mind-sets.
In a meeting with one of the FPs, he shared that he had a hard time finding loads. Carriers also complained about not having consistent demand or having payment issues due to a lack of trust and visibility between them.
In that same meeting, I noticed that the FP kept track of his data and records in a huge A3 notebook that hardly fit on the table. He walked around with the notebook under his arm, as it was the core of every element in his business. He walked me through this A3 notebook and all its details as he documented every single transaction in it. This included loads, additional costs, contacts, referrals, POD tracking, receipts, and so forth, it was quite extensive. I was so surprised how someone could depend on such a notebook that can be easily lost, stolen, or ruined by a spilled cup of coffee. At this point, I wondered to myself how will this 100+ year old industry shift towards technology.
It was quite a challenge to try and change the existing system and convince the FPs and carriers that all the solutions they are looking for are found in our app. As they started to adapt to the app they noticed the benefits they gain through Trella’s value propositions, which are:
Demand: Trella provides carriers with consistent demand from various industries across by connecting them with shippers through direct booking. This means Trella ensures better utilization and efficiency through consistent loads.
Transparency: Trella widens the visibility of pricing and lets FPs and carriers have control and a clear view of their settlements and payments resulting in a more direct and transparent system.
A while after our first meeting we paid the FP another visit and we realized a lot has changed. What was most apparent is that he was not carrying an A3 notebook anymore and that was a relief! He started using our app more frequently while working, he substituted the notebook with his phone with our app installed. Trella has created a large impact we had on the way business is done in this industry.
